A Rivers State House of Assembly candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Hon. Desmond Sunday Stephen, has dumped the party for the Action Democratic Party (ADP), stressing that the move would afford him the opportunity for greater representation of his constituency.
Stephen, a grassroots politician from Okrikra, who spoke in Port Harcourt, said that despite his contributions in the development of the NDC in Okrika and environs, the ADP presents a formidable platform to actualize his leadership vision for the people.
In a resignation letter dated May 25, 2026, Stephen expressed gratitude to the NDC leadership and members for the opportunities and political experience he gained during his time in the party.
He noted that he arrived at the decision to leave the party after a careful reflection on the task ahead, noting that the move to ADP would strengthen his commitment to serve the people of Okrika with energy and clarity of purpose.
He said that as a development advocate with experience in grassroots mobilization and empowerment, the ADP platform better aligns with his vision for education, infrastructure, healthcare, and economic opportunities in Okrika.
The House of Assembly candidate noted that he took the decision after he held a meeting with the people of his constituency, who he noted gave their support because they feel it would ensure “a more responsive and people-centered representation.”
“I didn’t just wake up and decided to leave the NDC. The decision was
born out of the desire to give a good representation to my people, who are fully behind me,” he said.
